Cell surface glycans, such as glycocoproteins and glycolipids, encode information that modulates interactions between cells, or between cells and the extracellular matrix, by specifically regulating the binding to cell surface-associated or soluble carbohydrate-binding receptors, such as lectins. Rapid modifications of exposed carbohydrate moieties by glycosidases and glycosyltransferases, and the equally dynamic patterns of expression of their receptors during early development, suggest that both play important roles during embryogenesis. Among a variety of biological roles, galectins have been proposed to mediate developmental processes, such as embryo implantation and myogenesis. However, the high functional "redundancy" of the galectin repertoire in mammals has hindered the rigorous characterization of their specific roles by gene knockout approaches in murine models. In recent years, the use of teleost fish as alternative models for addressing developmental questions in mammals has expanded dramatically, and we propose their use for the elucidation of biological roles of galectins in embryogenesis and innate immunity. All three major galectin types, proto, chimera, and tandem-repeat, are present in teleost fish, and phylogenetic topologies confirm the expected clustering with their mammalian orthologues. As a model organism, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) may help to overcome limitations imposed by the murine models because it offers substantial advantages: external fertilization, transparent embryos that develop rapidly in vitro, a diverse toolbox of established methods to manipulate early gene expression, a growing collection of mutations that affect early embryonic development, availability of cell lines, and most importantly, an apparently less diversified galectin repertoire.

The patterns of danio fishes comprise several different classes of pigment cells, or chromatophores, including: black melanophores, yellow or orange xanthophores, red erythrophores, and iridescent iridophores () (; ; ; ). This variety of cell types differs from birds and mammals, which exhibit just a single neural crest-derived pigment cell, the melanocyte. Also differing from amniotes is the fate of the pigment itself. Both chromatophores and melanocytes package their pigments within specialized organelles (melanosomes, in the case of melanin), but chromatophores retain their pigments whereas many melanocytes transfer their melanin to developing hair or feathers. Teleost pigment patterns thus reflect the spatial arrangements of the different chromatophore classes themselves, and the pigments serve as cell autonomous markers of their respective cell types. Interestingly, erythrophores are present in some but not all danio species and appear to have arisen or been lost independently across taxa (; ). The cell lineage relationships among different pigment cell classes are only poorly understood.

It is never a good idea, however, to house only a couple of Danios with other types of fish If you're new to the aquarium hobby it's hard to think of any fish which could make a better choice for you than danios. Small, hardy, easy to care for, attractive to look at and always active, they're great pets, and they're not even very expensive. Fond of the upper levels of the aquarium which most other fish avoid, they fit in easily in community tanks and can make a superb addition to your aquarium.

Playful and highly sociable, danios are naturally happy in the aquarium environment, but they'll be at their happiest if you can supply them with strong currents, plants, and other items which give them things to do. Make sure they have plenty of space to move around.

They enjoy darting about and chasing each other, though never aggressively. Omnivorous by nature, they will eat almost any food, but you should make sure they get plenty of vegetable matter (in the form of flakes or algae discs) in order to be healthy, and they enjoy live food for treats.

Types of Danios
There are six types of danio commonly available:
Zebra Danios-With striking horizontal stripes, these active little fish make a handsome addition to any aquarium. They prefer relatively cool water and plenty of light.
Pearl Danios- These beautiful iridescent fish are highly adaptable but do need plenty of oxygen, so make sure your aquarium has good filtration.
Leopard Danios-These hardly little fish have a black spotted pattern all over their bodies. They sometimes interbreed with zebra danios.
Gold Danios- Highly active and fond of playing near the surface, these fish have golden-orange stripes running the length of their bodies. They are sometimes (incorrectly) called albinos.
Blue Danios-These fish have a mottled blue and white appearance and are believed to be descended from leopard danios.
Giant -Twice the size of other danios, these fish are happiest in large shoals, so they need a lot of space. They are also quite shy, so they won't give you as much to watch.

The list of potential tankmates is endless, but some species that I have had success maintaining with are various medium-sized barbs (spp.), robust medium-sized tetras (spp., spp.), various loaches (sppspp.), corydoras catfish (spp.), small to medium-sized plecostomus (spp., spp.), and of course other similarly sized danios (spp.). can also be utilized as a dither fish for many types of smaller and less aggressive cichlids including kribensis ( spp.), keyhole cichlids (), and flag acaras ().
