Using data on the aquarium trade and shipping traffic, the study is the first to convincingly demonstrate that well-meaning pet owners can cause a “hot spot” of non-native tropical marine fish, Semmens says. Golden dwarf barbs don't place very manydemands on the aquarist, readily eating dry foods as well a frozen andlive ones, and will even nibble at a little green algae if there issome. Ideally, the water should be slightly acidic, but they seem to dowell in neutral to slightly alkaline water conditions as well. Likemany other subtropical fish, these Indian barbs are a bit sensitive tolow oxygen levels, and this is one reason that they are oftenconsidered delicate by aquarists who keep them in ordinary communitytanks. They also appreciate plants, particularly floating species, andthey like to hang about in the shade rather more than in brightly litareas. Nonetheless, when settled in they are lovely fish well worthkeeping. Some fish are capable of withstanding a wide range of temperatures and are usually hardy in just about any region when kept indoors without an aquarium heater. Some, such as the common goldfish, can even be kept outdoors in temperate climates. Non-tropical fish include the clown loach, pufferfish, goldfish, koi and common guppy. The fancier guppies do better in temperate zones when kept in heated tanks, as they are more fragile than the ordinary feeder guppy.
