The fighting fish’s wild ancestors lived solitary lives in rice paddies and small fresh water streams of Thailand / Siam (not Japan, China – as some names would suggest). They were a dull brown or greeny color and were a carnivorous fish that would feed on tiny crustaceans, insect eggs and larvae. I've now turned the original "Betta" page into a page for the genus , and renamed this as Siamese fighting fish, which is more consistent with usual practice for species with well established common names. It's a bit of a compromise given that "betta" is so often used to refer just to this species, but anyone who looks it up will be sent here pretty promptly anyway.
