Young Royal Blue Double Tail DT Male Live Betta Fish

The Double Tail Betta is also known as DT or DTM (doubletail male), and DTF (doubletail female). They are a cultivated mutation that gives the fish a dorsal fin equal in length to the anal fin, and two distinct caudal lobes. Often it also produces a thicker-bodied fish with a wider backside, or deformities such as crooked spines.

Betta fish are also bred to have a . These can include the Veil Tail, which is the most common type, where the tail appears to arch up before draping down like a veil. Crown Tail Bettas have spiky, separated tips on their fins, while Half-Moon Tails have straight edges and, just like a half-moon shape, spread open in a 180-degree angle. Rose Tail Bettas have so much going on in the fin department, their tails drape and overlap, giving them the appearance of overlapping rose petals. Although similar to Rose Tails, the fins on Feather Tail Bettas have a more ruffled, feathered appearance. Other tail types include the Delta, Super Delta, Double Tail, Spade Tail and many more. This tail type is a very beautiful one, where the caudal fin is split in the middle, producing two caudal peduncles and what are referred to as tail lobes (fins). A true Double Tail should have an even split right to the body and have two caudal peduncles. The dorsal fin on a Double Tail is extended. Breeding Double Tails to Double Tails is a very risky cross, as this will produce fish with spinal deformities and short bodies due to the twin caudal peduncles. This tail type can sometimes be seen in combination with any of the Delta Tails and Half Moon bettas. Often in Bettas you will find they have two tails growing out of the tail base. With the two tails you also see a doubling of the other two unpaired fins. The dorsal will have a double or broader base and the anal should also be wider and fuller. If you draw a line through the center of the fish horizontally, one expects to see mirror images with relation to finnage. The better DT's have the tail split all the way to the tail base.
